A brief history of the area
Previously known as Visser's Baay, it is believed that the existence of Gordon's Bay came about around 1673.
Gordon's Bay was known as a place where fresh water, fish and game could easily be found. Although there is
no clear indication of when the name came into existence, we do know the name commemorates Robert Jacob
Gordon. Robert Jacob Gordon was the Commandant of the Dutch Troops at the Capeform from 1777 - 1795.
One of the first things you see, as you enter Gordon's Bay, is the large white anchor and the initials GB on the
mountainside. The initials do not stand for Gordon's Bay, but for General Botha. The rocks were painted by
students in 1949, a year after the establishment of General Botha SA Nautical College. On 1 April 1966 the South

emblem of Gordon's Bay.
