A brief history of the area
Kempton Park lies on what was two farms in the South African Republic (ZAR) - Zuurfontein No 369 and Rietfontein 32 IR. The city was established on 24 August 1903 when Zuurfontein was subdivided into 216 residential stands. It was named Kempten after the German town in Bavaria, and later to Kempton Park.
In 1952 the Jan Smuts International Airport was built on land next to the community. The airport's name was then changed to Johannesburg International Airport in the late 1990s and later to O.R. Tambo International Airport in 2006.
