The thriving Klerksdorp is the largest city in the North West Province. Along with Rustenburg, Klerksdorp forms the economic heart of the province. It is a well-known hub of the South African gold mining industry. Klerksdorp is a significant contributor to the agricultural industry with sorghum, sunflowers, groundnuts, and maize mainly cultivated in the area. It also is the preferred location of the substantial breeding of Sussex cattle.

A brief history of the area
Founded in 1837 on the banks of the Schoonspruit River, Klerksdorp is one of the province's oldest Voortrekker towns. A farmer, CM du Plooy, established a large farm and parcelled out small plots to other Voortrekkers in return for their labour on the construction of a dam and irrigation canal. These smallholdings were the basis of Klerksdorp, which took its name from its first magistrate, Jacob de Clerq.

In 1897, The Railway Station was opened by President Paul Kruger, when the railway line from Krugersdorp reached Klerksdorp. It was proclaimed a national monument in 1983.

Klerksdorp has a semi-arid climate with warm to hot summers and cool, dry winters. The average annual precipitation is 482 mm, with most rainfall occurring mainly during summer. At an average temperature of 29.5 °C, January is the hottest month of the year. At 18 °C on average, July is the coldest month of the year.
