History
Krugersdorp was founded in 1887 by Marthinus Pretorius. Following the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand, the government purchased a portion of the Paardekraal farm to meet the need of a town west of the reef. Paul Kruger, the president of the Transvaal, was the inspiration for the town's name.
Krugersdorp, along with adjacent communities, is now part of the Mogale City Local Municipality. In and around Krugersdorp, gold, manganese, iron, asbestos, and lime are still mined.

January, at an average temperature of 20 °C, is the hottest month of the year, whilst the average winter temperature in July is 9,7 °C. There is substantially less rain in the winter than there is in the summer.

It's only a 30-minute drive to the Maropeng Visitor Centre, Wonder Cave, and Sterkfontein Caves, which house some of the world's earliest hominid fossils. You may also take a boat ride and educational tour of the Tumulus structure in Maropeng before touring the caverns where the 2-million-year-old Mrs Ples skull was discovered in 1947.
