Category RealADVICE
Whether you're staying home or travelling this summer, you need to ensure that your family, friends, pets and property will be safe, says Gerard Kotze, CEO of the RealNet property group.
"Summer and the long school holidays offer South Africans an array of delightful activities and outdoor adventures. But as we eagerly anticipate those sun-drenched days filled with beach trips, braais and long-awaited travels, it's essential not to let the season's excitement distract us from staying safe.
"From safeguarding against scorching temperatures to ensuring water-related activities remain enjoyable and risk-free, the following tips provide good guidance for a summer filled with good health, well-being and enjoyment as well as well-earned relaxation."
*Braai safely: Whether you're using a gas grill or making a more traditional wood fire, ensure that it's set up away from flammable materials, and always have a fire extinguisher nearby. Don't let pets or children get too near to the fire, and always make sure it's completely extinguished before you go to bed.
*Swim safely: If you have a pool, ensure that it's securely covered or enclosed by a proper fence with a self-locking gate to prevent unauthorised access, especially for young children. Also always supervise children and animals when they're near the pool, or on the beach, even if they know how to swim.
*Sunscreen and shade: Protect yourself and guests from the sun's harmful rays by providing sunscreen and ample shade options, especially during the peak hours btwen 11am and 3pm.
*Home security: If you have family and guests coming and going more than usual, make sure all doors and windows are locked when not in use. Also try to get guests to park in your yard and close your security gates while entertaining.
*Food safety: During gatherings or parties, make sure that the food is stored and handled properly to prevent any foodborne illnesses. Keep perishable food in coolers if you're outdoors, and clear any leftovers away into the fridge as soon as possible after a meal.
*Allergen information: If you serve food that has nuts or other allergens in it, be sure to lable dishes clearly and alert your guests to these.
*Check decorations: Inspect your outdoor lights for any frayed wires or damage before putting them up to avoid electrical hazards. Keep candles and any other open flames away from flammable materials and out of reach of children and pets.
*Have a plan: Have an plan in place and ensure all family members or guests know what to do in the event of an emergency, including how to leave and where to meet up. Also keep an updated list of emergency contact numbers handy, including local emergency services and nearby hospitals.
*Timed lights: If you're away for the holidays, use timed lights indoors to give the appearance that someone is home. Alternatively, hire a trusted housesitter or ask a neighbour to pick up your mail and park their car in your driveway sometimes.
*Avoid travel brags: Refrain from sharing your travel plans and dates on social media to avoid broadcasting an empty house to potential intruders.
