Explore the beauty of Rietvalleirand

Category Lifestyle

Pretoria East's booming upmarket residential neighbourhood, Rietvalleirand boasts modern contemporary houses with the latest designs and architecture from the property sphere. Residents of the green suburb have a huge variety of sectional-title and full-title property to choose from with beautiful views of scenic countryside.

Rietvlei Dam Nature Reserve
Rietvalleirand is ideally situated a few minutes from the Rietvlei Dam Nature Reserve. The reserve is a sanctuary for rhino, buffalo, cheetah, hippo, crocodile and various antelope species. Residents get to further experience the 3800ha of open grassland, conserved wetlands, indigenous tree species, and the popular Rietvlei Dam. The Rietvlei Dam is an attraction for visitors as they get to enjoy many outdoor activities such as freshwater fishing, hiking, horse trails, camping, game viewing, bird watching, as well as picnicking. The dam is also important to Pretoria as a whole as it provides the city with approximately 15% of its water. It is fed by the Sesmylspruit (Six Mile Stream), five fountains and five boreholes, while the Marais Dam acts as a sludge dam.

The Rietvlei Dam was dug up in the 1930s. Manual laborers were paid 4 shillings a month and soil was carted away by mule carts. The Rietvlei dam was completed in 1934. Initially, the Rietvlei dam was not open to the public, however, in 1948 the then Pretoria City Council decided to introduce endemic game species in the area, giving birth to the Rietvlei Nature Reserve. 1988 saw the beginning of a two-year project which raised the dam and made other improvements for the convenience of visitors and the animals that call the place home.
