The essential moving checklist

Category RealADVICE

Moving from one property to another property can be nerve-racking for some. While it is an exciting time for new beginnings, it can also turn your life upside down if things are not accurate or in order. Aim to keep your essentials packed together in a labelled box so that when you arrive at your new home tasks will be less chaotic to handle. Essentials like a phone charger, scissors and a toolkit will come in handy during your unpacking sessions and help you get settled. It is vital to create an essential moving checklist prior to the big moving day to ensure that you are comfortable in your new home within the first week.

Cleaning Supplies
Ideally, it would be good practice to clean your new home before you move all your belongings in. However, the task of moving your beds, furniture, and other possessions can also make a mess. Therefore, it is necessary to keep your basic cleaning supplies aside for easy access.
With these basic cleaning supplies, you will be prepared for any moving situation:
    - Sponges
    - Dish soap
    - Hand soap for each sink
    - Paper towels
    - An all-purpose cleaner
    - A broom and a dustpan
    - Dust clothes or rags
    - At least one toilet paper roll for each bathroom

Phone Chargers and a Bluetooth Speaker
It will be perfect to unpack while listening to some cool music to lighten up the mood. Ensure that your phone chargers and Bluetooth speakers are easily accessible. This will avoid you having to unpack many boxes just to find one charger. Generally, when you do end up opening many boxes at the same time, the workload tends to look more than what it actually is.

Snacks and Water
Since moving into a new home is physically straining, be sure to have some snacks and plenty of bottled water on hand. Both your family and the movers will appreciate this gesture. If your fridge has arrived you can also pop a few bottles in there to chill during the warmer days. If not, fill a bucket with ice and allow for the water, juice or cooldrink to cool. Protein bars and fruit are also great quick consuming energizing moving day snacks.

An Overnight Bag
Packing an overnight bag will prevent you from the agony of searching through a dozen boxes and bags for your necessities. Leave the bag in your car so you will know where to find it in the hustle and bustle of moving homes.
Personal essentials for an overnight bag for moving day:
    - A pair of pyjamas or sleeping clothes
    - Clothes for the next day
    - Daily medications
    - A toothbrush and toothpaste
    - Shower essentials (soap, shampoo, conditioner)
    - A towel

Clean Bedding and Pillows
At the end of an exhausting day, all you will want to do is fall asleep in comfortable and clean bedding. A fresh set of linen will make you feel relaxed for the next day as well as make your room feel settled instead of in chaos.

Toolkit
A basic toolkit with a hammer, pliers, or screwdrivers may come in handy when you need to assemble needed furniture or a loose door handle within the first few days of moving.

Battery-operated Lights
Remember to charge or replace the batteries in your portable lights prior to moving. You may never know when loadshedding will strike and considering you will be spending the first night in your new home it can be quite easy to bump into the walls and furniture in the darkness.
