Ultra Violet is the colour of the year

Category Lifestyle

The Pantone Colour Institute has decided on Ultra Violet as the 2018 Colour of the Year and describes it as a dramatically provocative and thoughtful shade that communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking to point us toward the future.

"Our colour of the year has come to mean so much more than what's trending in the world of design; it's truly a reflection of what's needed in our world today," says Institute vice-president Laurie Pressman.

"And enigmatic purples like Ultra Violet have long been symbolic of counterculture, experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine making their unique mark on the world, and pushing boundaries through creative outlets. For example, musical icons Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix all brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality and artistic brilliance."

She says Ultra Violet also suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the excitement of discovery. "The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own."

Then finally, there is a mystical or spiritual quality attached to Ultra Violet. This colour is often associated with mindfulness practices, which offer a higher ground to those seeking refuge from today's over-stimulated world. The use of purple-toned lighting in meditation spaces, for example, creates a peaceful atmosphere and calms those that gather there.

As for its incorporation into home décor, Architectural Digest suggests that homeowners start by using it as an accent colour. Think flowers, throw cushions, artworks and lampshades.

If you want to do more, you can soften Ultra Violet it with other shades in the same colour family - like lilac, blush, mauve or blue - or be really bold and pair it with other dark colours, leather, velvet and old wood to create a moody, romantic tribute to more peaceful times.
